Thermoregulation of Escherichia coli hchA transcript stability.

The conserved chaperone Hsp31 of Escherichia coli is transcribed at low temperatures by sigma(S) and repressed by H-NS, whereas at high temperature, transcription is by sigma70 independently of both sigma(S) and H-NS. Here we present evidence for an additional, novel, temperature-dependent control of Hsp31 expression by increased transcript stability.

Transcript stability in the protein interaction network of Escherichia coli.

Gene expression is a dynamic process which can be controlled by a number of mechanisms as genetic information flows from nucleic acids to proteins. The study of gene expression in the steady state, while informative, overlooks the underlying dynamics of the processes. Steady-state transcript levels are a result of both RNA synthesis and degradation, and as such, measurements of degradation rate...

Thermoregulation of Escherichia coli pap transcription: H-NS is a temperature-dependent DNA methylation blocking factor.

The expression of Pap pili that facilitate the attachment of Escherichia coli to uroepithelial cells is shut off outside the host at temperatures below 26 degrees C. Ribonuclease protection analysis showed that this thermoregulatory response was rapid as evidenced by the absence of papBA transcripts, coding for Pap pilin, after only one generation of growth at 23 degrees C. The histone-like nuc...

Thermoregulation-dependent expression of Yersinia enterocolitica protein 1 imparts serum resistance to Escherichia coli K-12.

Resistance to the bactericidal action of normal human serum is one of the characteristics of virulent Yersinia enterocolitica. This property is attributable to the virulence plasmid harbored by pathogenic strains of the species. Serum resistance in Y. enterocolitica is thermoregulated, and its expression correlates well with the presence of virulence plasmid-encoded outer membrane proteins. To ...

RNA-Mediated Thermoregulation of Iron-Acquisition Genes in Shigella dysenteriae and Pathogenic Escherichia coli

The initiation, progression and transmission of most bacterial infections is dependent upon the ability of the invading pathogen to acquire iron from each of the varied environments encountered during the course of a natural infection. In total, 95% of iron within the human body is complexed within heme, making heme a potentially rich source of host-associated nutrient iron for invading bacteri...
